The replies to IDF Questionnaire 2296/A are reported. All the questionnaires were completed during the period September to December 1996, except one which was completed during January 1997, and all represented the situation with regard to cow milk (except Spain, which also completed a questionnaire for ewe milk).

The proceedings presented in this bulletin comprise three full papers – IDF’s role and activities in food legislation, Codex milk product standards: Applications and implications, Application of Codex labelling requirements to milk and milk products – and the Abstracts of a further 19 presentations. The role of Codex; its relationship with the WTO; and its impact on standards, both international and national, for milk products are examined. Also covered are country specific perspectives, illustrating how national dairy interests and governments are either adapting to and/or adopting the Codex standards and guidelines.
