The aims, necessary conditions and implementation of privatization in the former GDR’s dairy industry are discussed. The participation of the Treuhand-Anstalt (Trustee Institution for the former GDR) in the creation of the organizational framework in the new federal states is explained, with comments covering agriculture as a whole. The measures taken to implement privatization of Czech dairies by the non-standard method of coupon privatization are outlined. Finally, the European Commission’s efforts in providing Central and Eastern Europe with support in their agricultural reforms by means of the PHARE programme are explained.
