Publication description
Salmonella is a genus of Gram-negative, non spore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract of many species of animals, birds, reptiles, and humans. They are also found in the environment, which may be contaminated by the faeces of animals and humans. Certain Salmonella species can cause a disease called salmonellosis if the organism is consumed in contaminated food, or water, or from direct contact with animals. Salmonella enterica is the most common species causing foodborne illness.
